Thinking Inside the Box to Create Outside The Box

12/29/2017

A few weeks ago a friend of mine sent me a sample of the holiday card that she made for her daughter and  I was floored! It was an image where people were sitting inside what looked like 9 boxes (think the Brady Bunch). It was fun and whimsical and I wanted to do this!! I had seen this type of photography the previous year around the Holidays and loved it then too, but placed it on my "photography to do list" and  forgot all about it.

Well, if you all know anything about me by now, you know I LOVE a creative challenge. So what did I do?  I built a box of course! Ok, I didn't actually build it. My very handy husband built it for me and I painted it. It was completed within 2 days of when I first laid eyes on my friends card.
Now I am hooked! Here was my first try at photographing "Inside the Box". These models were VERY cooperative!
Picture
Then I got brave and found myself some live test models!  It was fun and and creative and made me want to do more!
Picture
So how does it work? Well, first you need a box, some good lighting and a steady tripod to keep your camera from shaking or moving. Of course I used my amazing Sirui Usa Tripod, which completely did the trick!!
I find that having some concepts and mini stories in mind before the actual shoot will help focus the session. But it is always important to leave room for spontaneity. It is in the spontaneous moments that I find the true smiles and personalities come out, making the photos full of life and joy.
Picture
However, the actual photo session is just a small (yet obviously important) piece of the puzzle. AFTER the clients go home is when the magic of Inside the Box happens. In order to create a fun and interactive composite where it appears that people are inside multiple boxes and interacting with one another, hours and hours of editing must be applied.
For all my photographer friends, I have created some videos to help you get started. This was the first time I have ever created videos of myself editing, so there are some places where the audio cuts out. Eventually, I will redo the videos, but for now I think they serve the purpose. As of right now there are 5 videos. If you go into the comments of the video you will see the links to all the rest.
PHOTOGRAPHERS: If you are a photographer and are interested in learning the process and talking with other creative, like minded people, then consider joining our new Facebook Page: Inside the Box Creative Photography and Portraits. I am giving away a Free 9 Box Photoshop Template along with guidelines on how to build the box and edit the photos.
I am also offering a variety of Inside the Box Photoshop Templates in my store at Alissa Beth Photography.
FAMILIES: If you are interested in booking an Inside the Box photo experience for your family, you can contact me directly at alissabethphoto@gmail.com.
Before I say goodbye for now, I want to end where I started. Over the last 3 weeks I have spent hours relearning some Photoshop skills, building a store, starting a thriving facebook group online, and thinking up fun and clever ideas to use Inside the Box. I certainly have been spending hours inside my own thinking box, learning and growing so that I can continue to think outside the box creatively!

30 Days of iphone Photos Challenge!

8/30/2017

So- I got an iphone! I finally did it! I have been a Samsung die hard for years and always refused to switch. I refused when my kids and husband switched, I refused when all my friends switched, and I even refused when none of my group texts worked properly and I had the nerve to ask all my friends to start using a texting app.

I loved my android! In my mind it has always been more "techie" and I am a techie girl! Not only is an android an open system where you can add more features to it, the camera on my galaxy note 5 is AWESOME! Truly amazing photos have been taken with this photo in the right light. I will miss it!

Picture
However, I decided to take the leap for photography.  There were some apps that I really wanted to try that were Apple only and I was always feeling a little envious of the iphone 7 dual camera system.

But more importantly, I have been given the opportunity to use Sirui USA's phone camera lens attachments and there was no adaptors for the android phone that I owned. When the attachments arrived I was so excited because they are QUALITY! Heavy duty glass! But other than using an old iphone 6 that I had laying around, I really have not been able to give them a spin. So...I have taken the leap!

To kick off the challenge I have posted below some of my favorite images that were taken by a cell phone in the last few years. Most were taken with the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 and one taken with an older iphone 6.

Join me on a 30 day adventure where I will be exploring the iphone 7plus multi camera system, the editing apps and my Sirui USA phone lenses.  I will creatively challenge myself to post photos each day on social media using ONLY my cell phone and describe what apps and features I used and how I feel about them!
Disclaimor: I am not paid by Apple, Samsung, SIrui USA or any other company.  All statements made in my 30 challenge are of my own opinion- good, bad or otherwise.

Alissa Beth Photography at the Embracing Our Differences,  2017 Sarasota Exhibit: Teaching A Lesson on Diversity

4/29/2017

Last week I had the privilege and honor to be one of 45 artists to have their artwork displayed on a HUGE banner at Bayfront Park in Sarasota, Florida as part of the the juried exhibit Embracing Our Differences. Embracing Our Differences in a non for profit company who's mission is through the arts to educate and inspire individuals on the importance of diversity to help create a better world!

Patriotic Drops can be purchased at the Long Island Photo Gallery
10% of the Profits will now be donated to Embracing Our Differences

Some of you may or may not know, by day I am a Speech-Language Pathologist working in a Middle School on Long Island, NY. So this honor is doubly important to me!

As stated from the Embracing Our Difference website (because they really wrote it best, so why should I try to reinvent the wheel?)
  • "Embracing Our Differences is a not-for-profit organization that uses the power of art and education to expand consciousness and open the heart to celebrate the diversity of the human family. It accomplishes this through an annual, large-scale outdoor juried art exhibition and a comprehensive series of educational initiatives, programs and resources designed for teachers and students.
  • We believe that diversity is one of the world’s greatest assets. To realize the promise of diversity, we must ensure that everyone is respected, included and valued for his or her individuality. Our goal is to create a community where diversity and inclusion are honored while teaching the importance of being an “up-stander,” and not a “by-stander.”
As an artist, it was an unbelievable honor to be one of the small group of 45 individuals who were chosen to be exhibited. Embracing our Differences received almost 11,000 submissions this year! Wow!!

The contest has both an art piece and a writing component to it. Almost half of the winners were students whose teachers submitted for them! The artwork and quotes were amazing! Each visual art piece was displayed on a huge banner and underneath it was a quote written by a different person. You can see all of the art that was exhibited here: Embracing Our Differences Winners  2017
Picture
As an educator who works with teenagers in a school that promotes diversity, has an active LGBT club, does tremendous Holocaust education and actively teaches anti bullying strategies, this was a double honor where my art can be used to help promote such an important lesson!
The Embracing Our Differences exhibit runs from April 1st through May 31st, 2017 at Bayfront Park in Sarasota, Florida. On April 24 there was a wonderful reception held at the Ringling College of Art and Design. It was there that I was able to meet some of the behind the scenes people who were instrumental in the success of this very important organization!

Diversity in Photography- Good or Bad?

"What is your favorite subject to photograph?"

As a photographer, I get asked that question A LOT! And truly, I find it extremely hard to find the right answer. The truth is....I love it all!

I love being in a spectacular moment such as an incredible sunrise or sunset and capturing it with my lens!

And my newest passion of combining photography with digital painting is one of the most challenging and rewarding projects I have ever taken on!

Coming soon to the Long Island Photo Gallery
So do I have to pick just one type? Do I have to be just one type of photographer?
I think as a photographer or an artist, most of us want to find our own style or "voice". We want to create art that is our own as often times a well known artist is known for their style. I have contemplated this more times then I can count and asked myself...should I just shoot in just one style and develop that area? Is it ok to be so diverse?

The conclusion that I have come to is DIVERSITY IN PHOTOGRAPHY IS GOOD!

Diversity is what keeps me excited and motivated to continue. It is adventurous and keeps my brain excited to learn and explore. It fulfills my creative side and most importantly, it just makes me happy!

But that is just me. Other's may differ and that is ok! Afterall, diversity is what makes the world go round!

What do you think? I would love to hear your thoughts in the comments below?

Perfectly Imperfect-Augumented Reality Billboard Photography Project took 3rd Place at the International Photography Awards (IPA) in the Lifestyle Category

12/2/2016

Perfectly Imperfect-Augumented Reality is a photography series that I have been developing with my husband for a few years. It started out one day while we were in NYC for the afternoon. I was taking photos of the sights, so of course I had my camera in hand! My husband was standing next to a billboard and it almost looked as if he melded into the advertisment. He prompted me to take the shot of him and suddenly we were in a full blown photoshoot with him and the billboard model!  Little did he know that he would now be the subject of my new photography endevor, and thus the adventure began!
Picture
The more I thought about our fun experiment, the more I realized the social ramifications it had on society. Perfectly Imperfect- Augumented Reality Photography Series an exploration through satire of how billboard advertisement messages using life size celebrities and models are transformed once we insert a real life person. Billboards and advertisements in our digital world are so common and have blended so deep into our culture and society that they have become part of our visual landscape and almost go unnoticed, especially in urban environments where they are literally plastered all over the streets. Advertisement images are deliberate messages that subliminally help to dictate our subconscious mind to define what our reality should look like, feel like, be like. These messages are inferred via body language, facial expression and the text used in the advertisement with the intent for the passerby’s subconscious to go out and buy something, go somewhere or to do something. However, once we add the unexpected human element into the scene we can quickly alter the text and body language to take on a new meaning, often times with humor, to help remind us that we live perfectly imperfect lives.

Picture
Over the next few years we have made "jumping into billboards" a fun adventure. Sometimes he is not super thrilled, but mostly he is a great sport about it! His creativity and spontaneity has helped to create so many fun images. Sometimes I direct him into a pose and other times he naturally just places himself. It is a fantastic collaboration!

The images below were entered into the prestigious 2016 International Photography Awards (IPA) and won 3rd place in the Lifestyle category! This was a tremendous honor as the judges for this contest are world renown artists, photographers, editors from many famous publications such as National Geographic and Time Magazine.

Quick note about the above image, the sunglasses are actually my husbands and he placed them over her eyes.

Although taking photos with my husband around Manhattan has been great fun, I have started to incorporate new "models into the mix and I look forward to creating more augmented reality in many more urban environments around the world! Here are a few that include other brave family members!

Long Island Fine Art Photography Heads to Sedona, Page and the Grand Canyon- Part 2

9/14/2016

If you have been following my blog or facebook posts, then you know that I have just come home from an incredible trip to the Arizona Southwest.  After my family and I spent 3 amazing days in Sedona, we packed up the SUV and headed for a day of adventure in Page, Arizona.
Page, Arizona is on the border of Utah and is the home to Horseshoe Bend, Antelope Slots Canyon and the Colorado  River Rafting Discovery tour. Our first stop of the day was a fantastic, slow river raft tour down the Colorado River. This four hour tour started at the Glen Canyon Damn, looping around Horseshoe Bend and then back up to our starting point.
Picture
Picture
After we finished rafting, we embarked on what I think might have been the highlight of my entire trip, hiking up to Horseshoe Bend overlook!
Taking a photograph of Horseshoe Bend has been on my photographic bucket list for sometime. I have seen the iconic photo, researched it online and decided that although there are a million shots out there by every photographer under the sun, I still wanted to take it myself and place it into my own photo gallery. Not only is it a beautiful photo location, but it also requires you to sit very, very (and I mean very!) close to the edge. There are no guard rails on this cliff, so if you are not careful you could fall off very easily.
Picture
Picture
etyThe trail to Horseshoe Bend is located 5 miles outside of Page and is highly visited by tourists. Before this trip, I did my homework, researching the best routes and sights that I wanted to see. But what surprised me during this hike was the the wide and expansive trail of first sand and then rock layers. It was like nowhere I had ever been, and afterwards I kept saying that I felt like I was walking on a moon crater. The pictures above show you the sandy trail and in the distance you can see the rocky, crater like ground.
Once I was standing on the abyss, I was awestruck by the intense beauty all around me and yet completely petrified by the height. I planted myself near the edge of the cliff, perched my tripod in front of me, tilted my camera downward and took a bunch of shots. In order to capture the full magnitude of the entire river bend you must use a super wide angle lens. I used a Tamron 15-30 mm lens on my Nikon d750 camera at 15mm.

I must say, I was thrilled with the results of my effort. Not only do I feel that I took a worthy photograph, but every time I look at it I will be reminded of my ability to overcome one of my greatest fears!

Stay tuned...Part 3 of our adventure is coming soon- The Grand Canyon!

Thanks for dropping by!

Part 1: Sedona

All photographs are the property of Long Island Fine Art Photography and were taken by Alissa Rosenberg from Alissa Beth Photography

Truth be told I am a Long Islander, New York born and raised beach girl to the core. Yet, photography has made me interested in seeing and photographing other regions of this beautiful country.  So, on August 20th, I packed up my family for our first trip to the Southwest. Wow!! It was breathtaking. This post will highlight some of my favorite places that we visited.
Picture
The first stop on our trip was Sedona, Arizona. What an amazing place! Hiking, jeep tours, shopping and of course photography. You name it, we did it! We took a fantastic private jeep ride with Safari Jeep Tours, who by the way, I HIGHLY recommend! We spent four hours off roading through Red Rock country. The highlight of the jeep tour was spending time hiking to an overlook of Merry-Go Round.

We were there during monsoon season, the incredible rain clouds that rolled in and out all day long allowed for extraordinary skies and photographic opportunities!

The next morning we decided to go for a hike up Cathedral Rock. I must preface this by saying I have a true fear of heights and this trip helped conquer that a bit! (Although some of us hiked up higher then others. I'm not saying who, but I can tell you that I did not get a photo from the very top! )

On our third day we packed up and left Sedona for Page, Arizona and then on to the Grand Canyon. Those photos and adventures will be the topics of my upcoming blog posts. However, on our last day we traveled back to Sedona and took a fabulous helicopter ride over Red Rock country. This was our families first time in a helicopter and although we were nervous (myself and my daughter, the boys not so much!) we truly enjoyed the ride!

Unique Macro Water Drop Photography Using Pencils, Red Solo Cups and Other Every Day Items!

7/19/2016

All images you see here or on my website can be purchased through LONG ISLAND FINE ART PHOTOGRAPHY.
This weekend is very exciting, one of the pieces from my unique collection of Macro Water Drop Photography will be on display at a very prestigious, juried show. This series of macro photos, which started on a whim, have now won awards and have been published in a national magazine. But how did it all begin?
Back in 2014, on a snowy day on Long Island, NY, I decided it was too cold to go out and take photographs. I was bored and looking for something creative to do. I had seen photographs of water drop bouncing high up, filled with with different swirly colors (such as the one below) and decided that it would be a fun project to embark upon in my kitchen.

(That is a water drop?? Yes! Actually, that is after the water has dropped into the pool of water and then popped back up. Didn't you know that it does that? Lol- Well, I didn't really either at the time! )
Picture
All IMAGES ON THIS WEBSITE ARE THE COPYRIGHTED PROPERTY OF ALISSA ROSENBERG AND MAY NOT BE DOWNLOADED OR REPRODUCED WITHOUT PERMISSION.
So I did what every good, techie does, I googled water drop photography and watched an instructional video on youtube! One of the instructions (sorry this may get technical for my non-photogs)was to set up a boom and hang a plastic baggy of water from it, cut the bottom and let the water drip into a shallow dish of water below. Once the drip hits the water it will pop back up, all happening within a split second.

The challenge was to use a macro lens on my camera to capture and freeze the motion of the water dropping and popping while staying in focus! A very important piece to all of this was to pre focus my camera based on where I thought the water would drop by using a pencil. So I dipped my pencil tip into the water in the exact spot where the water was dripping, focused and then locked my focus into place. Then all I had to do was start shooting photographs! Well, while pre-focusing, I looked through the view finder and thought that the red pencil dripping multicolored water drops was even cooler then the water pops themselves! Tons of macro photographers have tried their hand at macro photography water drops, but I had not seen many using objects in their photos. And thus, the macro water drop Series of Pencil Drops was created!!

The Original Pencil Drop

For the past 2.5 years I have been building a book of creative macro photography water drops that are whimsical in nature and different then I had ever really seen. It has challenged both my creativity and technical expertise. I am still creating and always trying to think of something fun that I can capture in my next water drop extravaganza!

Don't Fall Behind the 8 Ball

This past year has been quite exciting! The macro water drops are taking off! "Don't Get Caught Behind The 8 Ball" macro water drop photo below was featured in the August 2016 edition of Shutterbug Magazine!

Some of My Favorite Pencil Drops and Unique Macro Water Drops from my Water Drop Collection

Over time, I have been trying to capture drops with double meanings using a variety of subjects and objects. Sometimes the drops are whimsical, playing on a familiar pun or idiom and other times I have tried to capture more meaningful messages. One of my favorites is the first one below: UNITY DROP- Bringing the colors of the world together in harmony.

Water Drop Photos listed from Left to Right:
Unity Drop, Patriotic Drops, Soccer Pop, Paint Balls, Paint Ball, Love Notes, Love Potion #9, Pour Me Some Vino

These photos and more can be seen at LONG ISLAND FINE ART PHOTOGRAPHY.

Love Potion #9

So HOW do I capture the images inside those tiny drops? Are they photoshopped?

The answer is - no..they are NOT photoshopped. They are macro photography and science. I don't really understand the science part completely, google water refraction and you will have your answers.

And the answer is yes...I do use photoshop to clean up my images and crop them. And on occasion I have made one or two of the drops a tiny bit larger so you can really see what is inside. But the drops are real and the images that you see inside of them were NOT photoshopped in.

HOW do I do it? Well, that is another blog post for another day!

So- what do you think? Leave me a comment or just say hi below!!

A Winter's Tale- Winter Photography at the Vanderbilt Museum in Centerport, New York

All images you see here or on my website can be purchased through LONG ISLAND FINE ART PHOTOGRAPHY.

It's December, 2013, the weather forecast is snow and  I have this new passion for photography! I am not a fan of winter and its dreary, gray days, not at all! Just the hearing the word Winter can give me a pit in my stomache! But, for the first time in a very long time I am excited, almost happy! SNOW! I grabbed my camera, put on my hat and gloves, two pairs of leggings, my heaviest coat and ventured out. I drove 20 minutes north to a town called Centerport, Long Island. Although we don't have mountains, Centerport happens to be a hilly, beautiful town on the north shore of the Island where I often go to take photos. There are beaches and a harbor and lots of curvy roads. I headed to the Vanderbilt Mansion and Museum, which was once the estate of William K. Vanderbilt II. This location is 43 acres of waterfront property that was deeded to Suffolk county upon Vanderbilt's death in 1943 and was opened to the public as a museum in 1950. (And that is the end of our history lesson for the day!)

Ok, picture this...it is snowing. Not a little bit, but giant white flakes, the kinds you see in movies where children are usually laughing and running and having glorious snowball fights! I drive up this massive hill till I arrive at the estate, pull through the black iron gates and stop at the security house. The guard came over, took one look at me and politely told me that the estate was closed! Closed?? Why closed I asked? So he quietly pointed up to the sky and said that they were closed due to the fact that we were in the middle of a giant snow storm! Duh!! I am sure that he had to physically refrain from rolling his eyes at the sheer absurdity of the situation!  I told him that I understood and that I was just hoping to take a few photographs of the estate all covered in white. At this point he inched a bit closer to me and asked "are you a student?". Well, those were the nicest words I had heard in years!! A student??? I was 43 years old! Yes, I was a student of life! lol! I chuckled and told him that I was not a student but just a very enthusiastic, amatuer photographer looking to capture a moment. Well, I am sure that is not exactly what I said, but something like that! I guess whatever I said made some impact on him because the next thing I knew he decided to not only grant me entrance but gave me free reign to walk around the estate and take photographs!

And there you have it! This photo was taken close to the entrance of the estate and it is looking down at the boathouse. Beyond the boathouse is the Long Island Sound. It was truly a heavenly scene! I explored the estate property until I could no longer feel my fingers and toes!

Fast forward two years later and this photograph had now become the most well known in my collection. It won a photo contest, was chosen to be on display in a gallery in New York City and was the first photo that I have ever sold, not to mention it received thousands of "likes" on social media.

Now that winter is just around the corner again can I honestly say that I am excited? Well, no. I still get a that same, darn pit in my stomach. But now I also have a winter photography bucket list that I look forward to completing! Someday!

LONG ISLAND FINE ART PHOTOGRAPHY.

                                                     THE BEGINNING

Ok- here goes! A funny thing has happened since I picked up my first camera only a little more than 3 years ago...my life changed. It all started for me when I took a family trip to Italy. Well...of course I needed to get a new camera! Little factoid about me...I am a techie. Always has been-always will be. I can sit with the guys at parties and talk android vs iphone, computers, mega pixels, mega bytes and all other techie stuff as well as an man in the room. I have also been very creative, but never really knew how to channel it or what to do with it. I don't paint or sing or draw or dance (does zumba count?). However, I was always fascinated with photographs. I would take them and make basic collages in the days before collages were a drop in the bucket. And then came along instagram where I could play with them, filter them, colorize them and make them black and white right on my phone! But the true passion began in Italy. I bought a long lens point and shoot camera  and did not put it down the entire vacation. Ironically, when I got home it broke. Luckily, I bought it from Costco and my 3 month warranty had not run out yet. So I returned it and "upgraded" to my first DSLR, a Nikon d3100. I will never forget the day I placed the camera box on the edge of my bed, opened the flaps and looked at this scary, scary piece of equipment. It had dials and settings that I just didn't understand! In that moment I knew that  I was not going to just be one of those moms walking around with their "fancy" new camera and keep in on automatic. If I did that I could just as well have replaced the broken camera with the exact same model, and saved myself $300 dollars! Nope- I was going to learn how to use this thing!  I thought to myself " I am going to make the extra $300 worth it!". After all, I don't have to buy anything else ever again for this hobby! Right? My nifty camera came with a long lens, a wide lens and a 16mp card. I was done and ready to jump in. Little did I know that I was now entering one of the most expensive "hobbies" ever (she says 3 camera bodies later, 6 professional lenses, triggers, lighting, filters and other odds and ends).

                                            THREE YEARS LATER
Ok- now I am boring you with technicalities..so I shall move on to my point! It is 3 years later, hours upon hours of learning, reading, watching videos, taking workshops, and I have more passion for this than ever. People ask me all the time "what is your favorite thing to photograph?". I answer honestly- EVERYTHING! I love to take photos of adorable children in fields, sunrises, sunsets, moonrises, mountains, oceans and even waterdrops!! For me it is not the subject as much as it is the creative release. I want to create! " Create??" you say to yourself. "But you are a photographer who is capturing a moment in time, you don't create it". But that is not the way I perceive photography.

                                        PHOTOGRAPHY IS AN ART
If I were a photojournalist, then yes, I would be preserving the events as they had happened. But for me, photography is an art, a visual journey of consciously snapping moments and presenting them to the world through my minds eye. And the sheer fact that people like what I am creating is something that I don't ever think I will be able to process completely! Friends and family members have been more than encouraging, but of course what else were they going to say!  However, taking the risk and putting my work on Facebook for the review of strangers has been extremely humbling. I am in awe at times of the comments and praise, something I hope I will never, ever just take for granted. And over the last 15 months I have entered and been accepted into over nine Juried Photography competitions, was the Grand Jury Prize winner of one of them, had a solo Gallery Exhibit (at a wine bar on Long Island, which of course I had to go "visit" every week! ), and had one of my photographs hung in a gallery in NYC! Talk about obliterating my goals! Three years ago, not only did I not think this could not happen to me, but even more so, I didn't know that I WANTED it to.  In my mind,  I am still in the beginning of a never ending journey of learning! And I hope I always am!

SO-WHY A BLOG? WHAT-YOU WANT TO BECOME A WRITER NOW TOO?
And now we have finally come to the point of this blog. A funny thing happened since I have had the solo exhibit in Northport, NY  at the Wine Cellar on Main. Well..the first thing was that I frequented that establishment no less than 6 times, leading to a large increase in my wine intake (not such a terrible thing!). More importantly, since all of the photos that were hung in that particular show were of local areas around Long Island, NY, I have had a lot of people ask me about their exact location, and about my experience taking each shot. In talking to many individuals, I realized that each piece holds a significant memory or experience that I hold near and dear and would like to share. I think once per week I will post a landscape photo on this page and share the backstory behind it. Sometimes it will be of Long Island, other times not. Either way, it will be a journey!
